Thirty-five new biogas plants will be built in the eastern province of Holguín this year, reports the Granma newspaper and Havana Times.
Based on a Chinese design, the plants have been adapted to the conditions of Cuban producers, particularly considering the mass and volume of animal waste. The use of methane produced will focus on cooking food for human and animal consumption.
There are currently 32 operating biogas generators in Holguin, which provide about 8,750 cubic meters of methane each month and annually eliminate more than 38,560 kilograms of pollutant loads.
Despite increases in the production of biogas, fossil fuels remain the principal source of energy in Cuba.
